Dave ExtraCash, a popular cash advance app that promises to send money instantly when you’re short between paychecks, has allegedly misled customers and charged extra hidden fees.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Dave Operating LLC misled users through unfair and deceptive practices in its cash advance product. After paying a $1 monthly subscription fee, some users were not guaranteed an advance, and those who did receive one faced additional “Express Fees” and default “tips” that drove up the cost.

The FTC alleges that Dave structured its app to make it appear that tipping was expected or even required, while concealing the option to opt out. Many users didn’t realize they were paying up to 15% of their advance in extra charges.

These practices may have cost consumers millions of dollars nationwide in hidden fees.

How Dave’s “Tips” and Express Fees Worked

Dave ExtraCash markets itself as cash “in 5 minutes or less”, but to get that money instantly, an Express Fee of several dollars is often added. Otherwise, it could be up to three days’ wait.

On top of that, Dave automatically selects a 15% “tip” on each advance. Many users believe this is mandatory or part of the loan itself when in reality, the “tip” is entirely optional.

For example, if someone requests a $100 advance, Dave might take:

  • $15 “tip” (preselected by default)

  • $5 express fee for instant access

  • $1 subscription fee per month

That’s more than 20% in upcharges—often taken automatically.

What Affected Users Can Do

If you paid for Dave ExtraCash, even just the $1 monthly fee, you may qualify for compensation. Average damages are estimated at around $1,000 per user, depending on your transaction history and state law.

Here’s what you’ll need to provide:

  • The email associated with your Dave ExtraCash account

  • Confirmation that you paid Express Fees or extra “tips”

  • Any documentation/screenshots showing you have or had an account
